Caterham Racing made its Singapore debut in GP2's inaugural
series race in the Republic's capital city. Practice began at
16:45hrs allowing the drivers to acclimatise to the new track and
surroundings before a highly humid qualifying session began under
the lights.
For Caterham Racing's Giedo van der Garde, however, it was a
case of new surroundings, same old luck, as he endured another
torrid bout of misfortune on track, after once again putting
himself in a promising position early in the session. After eight
laps van der Garde was in P4 before pitting to refuel and change
tyres in preparation for his final push for pole. The Dutchman then
left the pits and was in the middle of clocking his fastest lap by
some distance when the session was red flagged due to an Ocean
Racing Technology car slamming into the barriers. With only two
minutes remaining on the clock, the session was not restarted and
van Der Garde found himself somewhat unfortunate to be starting
Race 1 in P14.
Things were no better for Caterham Racing teammate Rodolfo
Gonzalez, who, after a strong run in practice, found himself caught
up in qualifying traffic before also seeing his final push for a
grid position cut short by the red flag that ended the session. He
started the race in P23.
Giedo van der Garde (P14 / Best lap 2:00.906)
"I was up to speed quickly again here in Singapore. The track is
very good to drive on but unfortunately we didn't quite have the
right car for it. The track is very bumpy, and the car was jumping
around a lot which made it difficult to handle at times, but we
were so unlucky with the red flag. I was 0.8 seconds up on my
fastest lap time when the session was ended. if I had been allowed
to finish we would have started top eight for certain. Obviously I
am very disappointed as this is my worst qualifying position of the
year, but all is not lost. We have six places to make up if we want
to finish top eight tomorrow, it will be tough but not impossible.
I will give it my best shot and see what we can do."
Rodolfo Gonzalez (P23 / Best lap 2:02.260) "I think the setup we
initially chose was too stiff for this bumpy track. We changed it
for the second part of qualifying but I was then held up in traffic
and wasn't able to push on. When I finally had clear air the car
felt good and I think we would have improved our lap time but then
the session was red flagged. We were unlucky but I hope I can have
another good start and salvage something in race one."
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer "Both our drivers had
a bit of bad luck in qualifying. When the session was stopped Giedo
was on his fastest lap with one more to go and he would definitely
have improved his time. As it is he started P14 with some work to
do to catch up to the leaders. Rodolfo had a really good run in
practice but his qualifying also did not go to plan. We will have
to look at all the data and see if we can improve the cars for race
one so that we can race better than we qualified. I am however very
grateful to both drivers. They did a fantastic job out there to
keep the cars out of trouble and bring them back in one
piece."
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett "Unfortunately
red flags ruined our runs in qualifying, which of course is
disappointing for the whole team. Giedo wasn't completely happy
with the car, complaining it was very bumpy, especially over the
kerbs. We will have to look at this issue before the race and see
if there is something we can improve on. Starting from P14 will be
risky in itself, there will be a lot of fighting for position at
the start and it's not the easiest track to overtake on, but all
being well he can have a clean start and work his way up to finish
in the top eight. During the break between sessions the team made a
good change to the anti-roll bar on Rodolfo's car. This greatly
improved his balance and the way the car rides the kerbs. However,
he did not have the chance to improve his lap time before the
session was stopped so starts P23 in race one. He is disappointed
but it seems the people who did their best times earlier in
qualifying were rewarded so good luck to them. It will be a
tough race for us but as always we will push hard for both drivers
to record good result at the chequered flag."
