An exciting GP2 title deciding weekend began at the Marina Bay
street circuit in Singapore with ex-Caterham Racing and current
DAMs driver Davide Valsecchi being crowned champion after a season
dominating the field.
For Caterham Racing's current drivers, a strong performance in
race one saw Giedo van der Garde finish in the points, taking P8
from P14 on the grid. The Dutchman gained three positions in the
opening lap and was in hot pursuit of his competitors before
pitting. He battled long and hard throughout the race and was
finally rewarded with four championship points for his efforts.
Eight place also means Giedo start in the coveted pole position for
Sundays' sprint race, with hopes of a final race win in sight.
Sadly things were no better for Caterham Racing teammate Rodolfo
Gonzalez, who, after a difficult qualifying session, did not finish
the race. The Venezuelan's car was damaged when an incident on lap
one knocked the steering out of line and broke his suspension.
Unable to carry on Rodolfo was forced to retire from the race
early, sadly taking him out of the running and placing him P23 on
the grid for race two.
Giedo van der Garde "We made some changes to the car which
worked well in certain areas of the track but perhaps not so well
in others. But overall I feel I really got amongst it today and had
some good battles. I made a good start and was quickly up to P10
and catching up with the guys in front. We lost a position in the
pit stops which was a real pity, especially because I know we were
quicker. When I got back out I was battling hard for three or four
corners but lost a couple of places before we finally made it back
up to finish P8. It was a good race for me and I am happy with the
result, especially starting from P14 - our main aim today was to
finish top eight and we achieved that. We have some changes to make
to the car before the sprint race tomorrow but I am confident we
can do something good from pole position."
Rodolfo Gonzalez "I had barely got going when I was hit hard on lap
one. The impact broke my suspension and from there I struggled. The
steering was bent and the steering wheel shook at high speed, it
was just too dangerous to carry on so I pulled over before we even
had a chance to collect much track information. It is such a shame
because the car had been feeling really good and my pace was quite
competitive. I just hope we can have a clean second race and finish
the season with a good result."
Caterham Racing Team Manager Phill Spencer "Sadly Rodolfo was hit
in the first lap which knocked his steering out and subsequently
damaged his suspension. Following that he had a coming together
with Teixeira which caused further damage, forcing him into the
pits for an unscheduled stop. The team made some repairs and fitted
a new nose before sending him back out but almost immediately he
parked up, retiring from the race as a safety precaution. He said
the steering was too bent and that the car was too damaged to
continue. On the other hand Giedo had a fine race. He had with some
really good battles with Calado and one or two other drivers and it
feels nice to finish in the points. We have set ourselves up to
start in pole position for the Sunday race so hopefully from there
we can lead the way and finish the season on the podium."
Caterham Racing Chief Engineer Humphrey Corbett "Rodolfo was
once again unlucky. He was taken out early on when someone made a
risky manoeuvre and collided with his car. The incident bent his
steering so much there was a lot of play in it and it became too
difficult to drive. After one trip to the pit lane Rodolfo made the
wise decision to stop for safety reasons. I feel sorry for him as
he said before the race that the car felt good so we will keep a
similar set-up for the race tomorrow and hope for a better
run.
"As for Giedo, he will start in pole position for the Singapore
sprint after a good strong race one. It's a great result for the
team, especially considering where he started. He said the car was
ok but that towards the end the tyres were completely shot. We
really have to look at preserving the tyres a little more but we
think we know what we need to do now. If Giedo can get a good start
and drive his own race we are in with a good chance of finishing
the season with some silverware and that would be fantastic!"
